About

Overlap is a fun quarterly show & tell night for animators and animation lovers to show work, share ideas and hang out.

We'll be at Nortons Digbeth with special guests Moth, Chris Shepherd AND Dog & Rabbit. Animators will be show&telling their films, and as ever, Louis Hudson will bring costumed chaos as host.

Founded by RCA grads Dan Chester, Marie-Margaux Tsakiri-Scanatovits and Dave Prosser, Moth’s work has been celebrated at festivals, earning BAFTA noms, an Annecy Cristal and D&AD pencil. Their vivid visuals, sensitive storytelling, and strong emphasis on character have seen them work with clients including: Netflix, New York Times, Google, Marie Curie and Spotify.

Dan and Margaux will be doing a deep dive into their original short for Monument Valley III. The hit indie game is known for its mediative ‘felt’ narrative, beautiful art direction and MC Escher-like impossible geometry puzzles. Commissioned by Ustwo games & Netflix, Moth developed these characteristics into a cinematic, intimate story.

Animation legend Chris Shepherd will also be with us! The older ones will remember his Stareout Championship sketches for Big Train. My personal inspiration is his David Shrigley collaboration Who I Am And What I Want. As a director he's made acclaimed work for BBC and Channel 4 often merging live action and animation.

His films (such as Johnno's Dead, Silence is Golden, The Ringer) have won awards at dozens of festivals and often draw from his deeply personal experiences growing up in Liverpool. Talking of which, Chris will be showcasing his debut graphic novel, Anfield Road. It's a beautiful coming of age story set in late-eighties Merseyside. The land of the La’s, the Hillsborough disaster and Findus Crispy Pancakes.

Inspired? Submit animation from as short as 1 sec to: overlapsocial.com/submit

Deadline for submission is Wednesday 4th February.

The optional prompt is ‘IMPOSSIBLE', but you can make whatever you want. It's not impossible.

Pre-booked tickets are £10. Tickets on the door will be £12.
