Our first lockdown special featured Swatpaz and Jess Ashman and took place as part of Flatpack Festival.

May’s Overlap was an experiment in creating as live and interactive a replacement as possible. As part of that David Stanley aka Guri Bosh was on hand again capturing the atmosphere of a live night from isolation. What makes a night like this worth it for me is the honest feedback you get from a live audience, and the random encounters you make around the venue. Loads of work went into integrating Zoom into the broadcast. Its breakout rooms helped create a way to randomly mingle. I can't wait for us to be back together. The real thing is way more satisfying, but it felt like we had a moment. The quality and amount of work submitted for the night was inspiring. Huge thanks to our guests Jessica Ashman and Swatpaz.

As usual we hosted local animation in as informal and shambolic a fashion as possible. We were also joined by special guest, Evgenia Golubeva.

Evgenia showed The Witch & The Baby and her new book based on her charming short I Am Not A Mouse. As well as an animation director and illustrator, Evgenia writes on shows such as Hey Duggee and Becca’s Bunch.

I'm chuffed with how these nights have gone. So many interesting animators have come out of the woodwork over the last year. Overlap gets a pretty diverse selection but a lot more submissions come from men than women. Additional to guests and reaching out to animators individually, I’d really like to work out how we can represent the area as best as possible.

This was our last outing at Kongs Birmingham. The venue was the perfect space for what we needed. Free. Super central. Wheelchair accessible. Screen and music already set up. Mood lighting. Central stage area and a bar in the same room. With a bit of work, it felt like a brutalist cabaret bar. It'll be missed.

Featuring local animation, a discussion with BAFTA-winning Will Anderson & Ainslie Henderson, and a live performance of Ainslie's theatre piece, Adjust.

Will & Ainslie have created work for Adult Swim, MTV, BBC, and toured countless festivals with their films. Their combination of humour, emotion and bittersweet storytelling is unique. It got as silly as it did emotional.
